Summer Playground Safety Alert

With the summer season in full swing, now’s the busiest time for playgrounds and outdoor recreation centers as children, dogs, and families enjoy some fun under the scorching hot sun. And while high temperatures are certainly expected around this time of the year, they also create noticeable safety concerns that can turn outdoor playtime into an uncomfortable or even dangerous experience.

For instance, a playground can look perfectly safe while its surfaces, like metal slides, handrails, or the rubber flooring, can become very hot from sitting in direct sunlight all day. Even though a sunny day can feel warm and manageable, playground surfaces usually become much hotter than the surrounding air.

That’s why it’s important for playground owners to think beyond routine maintenance and take action to make outdoor spaces safer for everyone involved. Here are a few key steps to keep visitors safe when temperatures start to rise.

The Hidden Dangers of Hot Playground Surfaces

As mentioned before, playground equipment can heat up a lot faster than most people realize. This is because sunlight carries energy in the form of radiation, which gets absorbed by the surface of playground materials and converted into heat. Some materials, like metal, are excellent conductors of heat, which means it transfers heat efficiently and can become very hot to the touch. Plastic and rubber heat up a little differently, but they still absorb and retain enough heat to create uncomfortable or unsafe surfaces.

Darker-colored playground materials can be especially tricky since they tend to absorb even more sunlight and hold onto heat longer. In fact, the darker the color, the more they absorb wavelengths of visible light instead of reflecting them. That absorbed light energy then gets converted into thermal energy, thus making those surfaces hotter.

This can lead to burns, especially for younger children who have more sensitive skin. That’s why it’s important to check materials and surfaces like metal slides, climbing bars, handrails, and rubber mats, as these can make standing, running, and grabbing far too painful. Simply place the back of your hand on the playground surface, and if it feels too hot for your hand, it’s likely going to be too hot for the little ones as well.

Simple Ways to Keep Kids Safe During Hot Weather

A few simple precautions can go a long way in reducing heat-related risks for kids, families, and pets.

Ideally, the first step is to plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day, like the mornings or evenings, as this is when temperatures are usually lower. But if you happen to go during the afternoon, be sure to check playground surfaces and materials using the back of your hand, as stated above.

It’s also a good idea to stay hydrated as often as possible. Encourage kids to take regular water breaks and cool down in shaded areas, especially during longer play sessions and intense heatwaves. Symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, excessive sweating, headaches, or nausea may point to a heat-related illness, which often leads to urgent care or ER trips, so be sure to keep an eye out for these signs.

Along with managing heat exposure, playground owners should continue regular safety checks throughout the summer. Inspections should include:

  • Loose hardware
  • Damaged equipment
  • Worn surfaces
  • Broken or missing parts
  • Trip hazards
  • Signs of weather damage
  • Cleanliness and debris

Checking for these issues regularly can help prevent injuries and keep kids safe throughout the summer. Take the time to evaluate your playground today and make sure your space is prepared for the summer season and beyond.

Why Shade Structures Make a Difference

One of the easiest ways to make a playground more comfortable during the summer is by adding shade. This is because shade structures add an extra layer of protection by blocking direct sunlight and reducing heat throughout the playground areas. This keeps slides, handrails, and even seating spaces much cooler, even during hot temperatures.

Safety aside, shade structures can also help protect playground investments over time. Since these help to reduce the amount of direct sunlight hitting these materials, they won’t fade, weaken, or wear out as quickly. Shade doesn’t completely stop UV exposure, but it can help to slow down its effects and minimize long-term damage for many years to come.

We Create a Cooler, More Comfortable Playground

Hot weather may be a natural part of summer, but it doesn’t have to keep children and families from enjoying outdoor playtime. With regular inspections, a few smart safety habits, and the addition of quality shade structures, playgrounds can be a comfortable and safe space to play, even on the hottest days.

Whether it’s a school, park, church, daycare center, HOA, or community space, a well-designed shade structure can make a massive difference in how kids play in an outdoor area. And at Southeast Outdoor Solutions, our commercial shade structures are built to provide reliable sun protection while blending in beautifully with playgrounds, parks, and other recreational spaces.
